Don’t you just LOVE the feeling of new socks on your feet? So cushy, so warm and so so soft and it makes your face do that ahh this is great thing.. If you’re weird like me and you love the feeling of new socks then you probably feel the same exact way about pillows.
I’ve been on the hunt for awhile now to find the best pillow inserts and coverings to dress up my leather couch and I found some I was really impressed with and I would love to share! So let’s talk about the following in this blog post.
Inserts VS. Non inserts For pillow Coverings
What size Insert to Choose for your Pillow Cover
What Fill type Is Best
The Best Pillow Cover Fabrics for Pets, Kids, & the clumsy person
Throw Pillow Inserts VS. Non Throw Pillow Inserts
I guess I’m a little biased but I don’t think there is much contest here in my opinion. To me having a separate pillow insert for a pillow cover is hands down the best option for any household with animals, kids or clumsy people who spill things a lot (raising my hand here).
Throw pillow Inserts Pros and Cons:
PRO - They can easily be removed so you can wash the pillow cover and just as easily be stuffed back into the pillow cover. This is the main seller for me.
PRO - Affordability
PRO - Many options in fill and size.
PRO - You can change out your pillow cover as much as you want for a refresh or to add festive touches during the holidays.
I don’t have any cons!
Non throw pillow inserts Pros and Cons:
PRO - No extra work involved since it’s all one piece.
CON - Most all in one throw pillows can’t be washed in a regular washing machine, only spot cleaned.
CON - You can’t remove the pillow cover to wash it!
What Size Insert Should You Choose?
If you’re wanting a plump scrumptious biscuit kind of look for your throw pillow then the ideal choice is to buy an insert larger than the size of your pillow covering. Snag and insert that is two inches larger than your covering. For example, If you bought a pillow covering that’s 20” x 20” then you’d want to buy a 22” x 22” pillow insert for it and so on. This will give you that full look you’re after. Check out the Reference Chart below.
I recently bought 6 Microfiber/Down Alternative pillow inserts in varying sizes and I actually love them a lot. They are so soft, plump and fluffy. I can easily give them that “Karate Chop” look and they have great bounce back which makes for a nice comfortable supportive pillow. My boyfriend is a pillow hog and he really loves them, and my mom was even impressed by the softness, so compliments all around.
The other pretty cool thing about these inserts are that they come vacuum sealed and all you have to do is pop them in the dryer for 30 minutes on medium heat and they go from flat to baby got back instantly. It’s like watching dough rise in the oven. You can check them out here!
What Fill Type Is The Best?
Microfiber Filling - For those with sensitive skin and allergies this fill is Hypoallergenic, it’s soft, fluffy, moldable breathable and very supportive. Great for lumbar support or back support on the couch or in a chair.
Down Filling - Made of feathers from ducks or geese. They are known to be soft, comfortable and retain heat but they do require fluffing up form time to time as they can flatten out from use. The down pillows are ones Hotels typically go for because of their luxurious feeling.
Down Alternative Pillow (synthetic) - These are a version of normal down pillows but they use polyester fabrics to replicate that down feeling. They are soft and firm, lightweight and long lasting. Some are a combination of microfiber filling and down alternative making it a very fluffy, moldable pillow with quick rebound for great support.
Feather Fill - These are the more classic and most popular pillow fills. They offer support and maintain their shape and are lightweight. They also require regular fluffing and don’t be surprised if you get poked by a feather as they tend to shed out from their enclosure.
The Best Pillow Cover Fabrics For Pets, Kids and The Clumsy
Things to consider when looking for pillow fabrics is Durability, stain resistance, washability, protection and breathability/hypoallergenic. I’m not really one to buy random pillows at home stores because you’re stuck with what they have. I like to get what I pay for with a throw pillow.
Having a washable pillow cover is huge and another reason why I love having my cover and insert separate.
Microfiber Fabric - Very durable fabric with easy maintenance. It’s great for pets and kids, can be cleaned with a lint brush and a vacuum. Feels great on your skin
Velvet Fabric - A family and pet friendly fabric that holds up to abuse well. It’s tightly woven and low pile making it scratch resistant and durable. Easy to clean with a lint roller or wipe it down with some water. Feels great on your skin.
Microsuede Fabric - A soft comfortable fabric that’s quite resistant to liquids and pet hair.
Crypton Fabric - A stain resistant and virtually waterproof fabric that is also claw proof. Take that cats!
I love adding pops of color to my space and I especially love being able to mix it up and swap out a pillow cover when I feel like it. Having a separate insert just for that is where it at! I like to have a soft base color for my walls and then I add in color with pillows, artwork, rugs, and little décor trinkets. Don’t be afraid to add some bold colors, textures and patterns to your couches or your bed!
The details are in the little things and the little things are what make your home huggable and joyful to be in. Immerse yourself in the comforts of new socks and pillows! I just recently bought some pillow inserts and pillow coverings I really love and I’m going to share them with you in the link below. I hope you enjoy!
